The Expansion

BonBon Swedish Candy Co. is placing its BonBon Originals line in more than 1,900 Target stores nationwide, the brand's largest single-retailer deployment since its 2017 founding. The move pushes BonBon's total U.S. retail door count past 5,000 and signals the Swedish candy category's continued graduation from specialty novelty to mass-market staple.

Two SKUs are leading the charge: BonBon Sour Candy Gummies x Moomin — character-shaped, vegan gummies finished with sour sugar and offered in lemon, raspberry, cola, and melon — and BonBon Strawberry & Blueberry Candy Clouds x Moomin, a foamy, airy format dusted in sugar. Both retail at $4.99 for a 4.1 oz. bag and are produced by Finnish confectionery heavyweight Fazer, lending manufacturing scale and supply-chain credibility to a brand that imports 100% of its product from Scandinavia.

Category Context

The Target placement arrives as Scandinavian confectionery accelerates its crossover from boutique discovery to mainstream confections set. Swedish candy's rise has been fueled in part by social media virality, and BonBon has been a direct beneficiary of that attention since Leo Schaltz, Selim Adira, and Robert Persson opened the brand's first pick-and-mix shop on Manhattan's Lower East Side nine years ago. The company currently operates seven brick-and-mortar locations across New York and Connecticut alongside a growing e-commerce business — a diversified channel mix that gave it direct-to-consumer equity before pursuing mass retail.

For grocery and mass-channel buyers, the SKU profile matters. The Moomin-licensed formats tap licensed IP that resonates with younger demographics, the vegan positioning on the gummies broadens permissibility, and the sub-$5 price point keeps the brand competitive with domestic premium-gummy players in a segment where impulse confections continue to outperform center-store averages. Natural colors and clean-ingredient posture also align with Target's ongoing effort to differentiate its food and beverage assortment on better-for-you attributes.

What's Next

With more than 5,000 retail doors now in play, BonBon's near-term challenge shifts from distribution acquisition to velocity — driving turns-per-store sufficient to justify shelf real estate at a mass retailer operating nearly 2,000 locations. The Fazer manufacturing relationship provides the production throughput to supply at scale, but sustained placement will depend on whether the brand can convert cultural buzz into repeatable basket contribution. Operators sourcing specialty confections for gift shops, hotel sundry, or foodservice retail may find BonBon Originals increasingly accessible through broadened distributor networks as the Target rollout normalizes supply lanes across the country.
