Patrick Galleher, Chairman and Managing Partner of Boxwood Partners, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the International Franchise Association, with his three-year term beginning at the IFA's 2027 Annual Convention in February. The appointment positions one of middle-market franchising's most active M&A advisors at the center of the industry's largest trade body at a moment when franchise system sales and recapitalizations are running at elevated volume.

The Résumé Behind the Seat

Galleher's franchise credentials span all three roles in the channel — franchisor, franchisee, and sell-side advisor — a combination that is relatively rare in investment banking circles. He took a minority stake in sweetFrog Franchising in 2012, simultaneously becoming Chairman and CEO, and guided the frozen-yogurt chain from 15 units to 384 locations across 41 states before its sale to Kahala Brands in 2018. The brand's growth pace earned a place on the Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing private companies. Galleher retains 10 sweetFrog locations as a working franchisee, keeping him operationally grounded in the unit-economics realities his advisory clients face.

Since 2011, Boxwood Partners has completed more than 50 franchisor sell-side transactions, working with founder-owned and private equity-backed franchise systems in the $50 million to $500 million enterprise-value range. Recent mandates include advising on Tint World's majority recapitalization to Susquehanna Growth Equity in October 2025 and United Franchise Group's divestiture of Vast Coworking Group to New State Capital Partners. The firm was recognized on the 2026 Axial Advisor 100, a ranking of top middle-market M&A advisors.

Why the IFA Seat Matters for Franchisors

The IFA represents more than 832,000 franchise establishments in the United States, an ecosystem supporting nearly 8.8 million direct jobs and roughly $907.3 billion in economic output — close to 3.0% of U.S. GDP. The association's policy and advocacy work is particularly consequential for foodservice, which accounts for a disproportionate share of franchise unit count and employment. Decisions around joint-employer standards, minimum wage policy, and area development agreement structures regularly pass through IFA's government-relations apparatus.

Matt Haller, IFA President and CEO, cited Galleher's operator-level understanding as the differentiator: "Patrick brings invaluable experience to the IFA Board of Directors with a firsthand understanding of how franchising helps build thriving brands and supports local business ownership and jobs across the country and around the world." Galleher has been an IFA member since 2012 and has presented at annual conventions on scaling strategy, giving him institutional familiarity with the association's working dynamics before assuming a governance role.

For foodservice operators and multi-unit franchisees navigating an active M&A and refranchising environment, the election signals continued attention at the IFA to transaction advisory issues — valuations, royalty rate structures, and private equity entry into franchise systems — that increasingly shape how brands grow and how franchisees plan exits. Operators tracking franchise development and area development agreement activity will find an engaged voice on the board with current deal flow across the segment.
