C&S Wholesale Grocers is rolling back prices by 6.0% to 15.0% on thousands of SKUs across its company-operated retail banners — Family Fare, VG's Grocery, Martin's Super Markets, and Piggly Wiggly — in a value offensive that began in May and now spans eight Midwest states.

The initiative, branded "New Lower Prices," targets the categories driving the most basket pressure for rural and small-market shoppers: fresh meats, produce, and everyday pantry staples. Dedicated in-store price tags call out reductions aisle by aisle, with additional savings available through each banner's loyalty and digital-coupon programs.

Scale and Category Focus

C&S operates more than 200 corporate-run grocery stores, making this a meaningful system-wide move rather than a banner-specific test. The eight states in scope — Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin — represent a swath of the Midwest where independent and regional grocers face persistent pressure from mass-channel competitors and discount formats.

Fresh proteins anchor the promotion: all-natural boneless chicken breasts, rib-eye steak, rib roast, and lean ground meat are among the highlighted items. Seasonal grilling staples — Nathan's all-beef franks and Kingsford charcoal briquets — are also featured, aligning the push with peak summer demand. On the produce side, Honeycrisp apples, bell peppers, and bananas lead the messaging. Pantry and household essentials round out the program, including condiments and name-brand household consumables.

Competitive Backdrop

The pricing action comes as grocery operators across the retail food segment face a demanding environment. Tariff-driven input cost uncertainty and persistent consumer sensitivity to food-at-home prices have intensified competition for share of stomach between traditional grocers and value formats. For a wholesale-to-retail operator like C&S — whose family of companies also includes SpartanNash and Hansen Distribution Group across 60 distribution centers — vertical integration offers some insulation on cost of goods, but margin management remains a key challenge when executing a broad markdown program.

Eric Winn, chief executive officer of C&S Wholesale Grocers, framed the investment as a long-term positioning move: the company described it as a commitment to "being the hometown grocer of choice" for communities that often lack proximity to large-format alternatives. That rural-community focus distinguishes the C&S banner portfolio from urban value players and reinforces a localized foodservice and grocery supply chain model that the company has built over more than a century.

Shopper loyalty programs at each banner — accessible via shopfamilyfare.com, shopvgs.com, martinsgroceriestogo.com, and shopthepig.com — are positioned as a layer of incremental savings on top of the shelf-price reductions, a structure that also generates first-party data valuable for promotional targeting.
