Gamified Nutrition Program Transforms School Cafeteria Menus Chartwells K12 is launching Nutrition: Game On, a new elementary nutrition education program designed to make healthy eating engaging through storytelling, hands-on activities, and interactive cafeteria experiences. The program, rolling out for the 2026–27 school year, centers on the Level Up Café, where students complete monthly nutrition quests, earn collectible badges, and interact with program characters to build healthy habits. "Every meal is an opportunity to spark curiosity. When students are excited to try a new recipe, taste a new ingredient, or explore flavors from around the world, nutrition becomes something they experience, not something they're taught," said Amy Shaffer, CEO of Chartwells K12. "Nutrition: Game On reflects our belief that the cafeteria is so much more than a place to eat. It's where great food inspires discovery, confidence, and healthy habits to last a lifetime."
Menu Features and Interactive Characters The program pairs chef-inspired recipes with monthly themes.
Students might enjoy a Cherry Limeade Smoothie Bowl during Brain Food month, explore herbs and spices through Golden Turmeric Brown Rice, or discover globally inspired flavors with Tandoori Tofu and Mango Lassi. Each meal connects ingredients and nutrition to broader learning. Program characters—Dani and Leo, along with Chef Sizzle, Hailey Harvest, Clara Curious, Mei Market, and Max Motion—guide students through quests featuring chef demonstrations, tastings, science activities, movement challenges, and take-home learning experiences. Progress appears on an interactive cafeteria game board as students earn badges. "Students learn best when they're actively engaged, and the best nutrition lesson often starts with a great meal," said Ashley Kakas, Senior Vice President – Marketing & Communications, Chartwells K12. "Nutrition: Game On combines foods students love with new flavors, memorable characters, and interactive experiences that make trying something new exciting."
Why It Matters
For school foodservice operators, Nutrition: Game On represents a concrete strategy for increasing student engagement with meals while reinforcing nutrition education. The gamification approach—badges, character guides, and monthly themes—offers a differentiated model as operators compete for student participation in cafeterias and work to address wellness mandates.
