The Promotion
Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) is leaning into group occasions with a splashy LTO stunt: a limited-edition "Big Ass Chipotle Bag" measuring 36 inches wide, 24 inches tall, and 12 inches deep, with a 170-liter capacity. The prop-scale takeout bag is not a retail product but a sweepstakes prize, designed to redirect consumer attention to Family Meals, the chain's digital-exclusive catering-light format for four to six guests priced at under $10 per person.
Beginning October 13, U.S. Rewards members who purchase a Family Meal through the Chipotle app or Chipotle.com are automatically entered into a multi-week sweepstakes running through November 10. Winners are selected weekly. The mechanic is a straightforward loyalty-purchase trigger—buy the high-ticket digital item, earn a shot at the collectible—a structure that simultaneously gooses digital order volume and average check.
Group Daypart Strategy
Family Meals, previously marketed as Build-Your-Own Chipotle, allow groups to assemble bowls, tacos, salads, and nachos from a shared protein-and-topping spread. The format is available exclusively through digital channels—app, Chipotle.com, and Chipotle.ca—with pickup available in as few as 10 minutes, positioning it squarely against third-party catering aggregators on convenience.
"Group occasions are a growing part of our business, and Family Meals give guests more ways to enjoy Chipotle together," said Stephanie Perdue, Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing at Chipotle. The comment signals that off-premise, multi-person dayparts are an active traffic-building lever for the chain as it works to sustain comp-sales momentum across its 4,200-plus units.
For operators tracking peer moves, the group-meal push mirrors similar digital bundle strategies employed across the fast-casual segment, where chains are competing to capture dinner and game-day occasions that have historically skewed toward pizza and full-service. Locking the format behind the app also supports Chipotle's broader push to grow its Rewards membership base—a key driver of higher frequency and customer lifetime value.
Campaign and Creative
The oversized bag is the centerpiece of Chipotle's first national campaign with agency partner GUT Miami. The creative pairs the bag against everyday objects—a trumpet, a Christmas tree, a branded Chipotle chair—to underscore scale through visual contrast, a format built for high social shareability.
"You see this ridiculously oversized Chipotle bag and immediately get the joke," said Ricky Casal, Chief Creative Officer at GUT Miami. "We leaned into that simplicity, treating it like a luxury object and letting the scale do the storytelling." The luxury-object framing borrows from streetwear and collector-culture aesthetics that have proven effective at generating earned media among younger QSR consumers.
Chief Brand Officer Fernando Machado called the execution "fun, ridiculous" and engineered to create the kind of object "fans would want to get their hands on"—language that reflects Chipotle's deliberate strategy of turning brand touchpoints into cultural artifacts rather than conventional food advertising. That approach has shaped campaigns at multiple chains competing for the same 18-to-34 demographic, and it dovetails with broader fast-casual marketing trends toward fandom-driven limited releases.
For foodservice operators and brand marketers, the campaign underscores a proven playbook: attach a high-visibility, low-volume collectible to a scalable digital menu format, let the sweepstakes mechanic drive app orders, and let social amplification carry the awareness load. With Family Meals priced accessibly and available on Chipotle's own digital rails, the margin profile of incremental group orders should be favorable relative to third-party-delivered catering alternatives. Watch for Chipotle's next earnings call to surface whether Family Meal mix shifts show up in digital sales or average check data.
