New Directors
Flowers Foods, the Thomasville, Ga.-based packaged bakery company with $5.3 billion in 2025 sales, is adding two independent directors with deep CPG finance credentials to its board, effective Nov. 18, 2026. The elections of Shaun P. Mara and Ken Plunk expand the board to 10 members; both will serve on the audit and finance committees.
The appointments come as Flowers — whose brand portfolio spans Nature's Own, Dave's Killer Bread, Canyon Bakehouse, Simple Mills, Wonder, and Tastykake — works to integrate recent acquisitions, upgrade its enterprise resource planning infrastructure, and restructure its sales and supply chain organization. Chairman and CEO Ryals McMullian cited both directors' "broad financial and transformation experience" as directly relevant to that agenda.
The Incoming Directors
Mara brings more than three decades of consumer products finance experience. He retired in June 2025 as CFO of The Simply Good Foods Company, where he guided growth strategy and the integration of the Quest brand after the company's public-market debut. His prior CFO tenures include Dean Foods, Teasdale Latin Foods, and Roofing Supply Group, with senior finance roles earlier at William Wrigley Jr. Company and Gillette. He also previously chaired the audit committee of Farmer Bros. Co.
Plunk's background spans consumer packaged goods, retail, manufacturing, and international operations. He most recently served as CFO and senior vice president of information technology at J&J Snack Foods, where he shaped capital investment, supply chain expansion, and acquisition activity. Earlier roles included senior finance and audit leadership at Walmart, as well as positions at The Coca-Cola Company and The Home Depot. He currently sits on the boards of WD-40 Company and Milo's Tea Company, with committee responsibilities covering audit, finance, risk, and governance.
Why It Matters
For a $5.3 billion bakery operator navigating simultaneous ERP deployment, a direct-store-delivery network under regulatory scrutiny in California, and ongoing pressure in the fresh packaged bread category, adding two CFO-caliber directors with M&A integration and supply chain finance backgrounds is a substantive governance move — not routine refreshment. The packaged bakery segment has faced persistent volume headwinds as consumers shift toward private-label alternatives and better-for-you formats; Flowers has responded partly through acquisition, most recently bringing Simple Mills into the portfolio to anchor a premium, ingredient-conscious tier.
Both directors' committee assignments — audit and finance — position them to weigh in directly on capital allocation, debt structure, and the financial controls surrounding ongoing transformation initiatives. For foodservice operators and retail buyers tracking Flowers' supply reliability and pricing trajectory, a board with strengthened financial oversight is a constructive signal heading into 2027 planning cycles.
