The J.M. Smucker Co. (NYSE: SJM) has promoted Jeff Varcoe, PhD, to Senior Vice President, Science and Technical Excellence, effective August 24, 2026. Varcoe will report to Rob Ferguson, Chief Product Supply Officer and Executive Vice President of Coffee, Pet, and Away From Home, and will oversee all technical disciplines underpinning product quality, regulatory compliance, and innovation at J.M. Smucker.
The New Role
Varcoe's elevation is an internal move built on a track record at Smucker. Since 2023, he served as Vice President of Quality Assurance and Food Safety, where he developed the company's food safety and quality vision. In his expanded SVP role, he assumes broader responsibility for scientific and technical leadership across a portfolio that includes Folgers®, Dunkin'®, Café Bustelo®, Jif®, Uncrustables®, Hostess®, and Milk-Bone®.
Ferguson highlighted the breadth of Varcoe's cross-functional experience as central to the appointment. "His broad experience across the food operations, science, and technical functions, combined with his commitment to developing talent and fostering accountability, makes him well suited to lead this important area of our business," Ferguson said.
Deep Industry Background
Varcoe brings more than 25 years of food-industry leadership spanning quality assurance, R&D, and manufacturing operations. Before joining Smucker, he spent 21 years at The Schwan Food Company, where he held a succession of senior roles including Vice President of Food Safety and Quality, Vice President of Manufacturing Technical Services, Director of Research and Development, and Director of Food Safety and Microbiology. That tenure gave him end-to-end technical exposure across frozen food manufacturing — experience directly relevant to Smucker's Uncrustables® frozen handheld business, one of its fastest-growing retail and away-from-home segments.
What It Means for Foodservice
For Smucker's away-from-home channel — which spans licensed Dunkin'® packaged coffee sold through select foodservice accounts, Folgers® commercial coffee programs, and institutional food products — quality infrastructure is a key competitive differentiator. As operators and food-and-beverage supply chain partners scrutinize ingredient traceability and food safety documentation more rigorously post-pandemic, having a dedicated SVP-level executive anchoring technical excellence signals that Smucker is investing in the compliance architecture needed to support large-scale commercial accounts. The appointment also reinforces the company's stated commitment to operational excellence as it integrates its expanded portfolio, which has grown substantially following the acquisitions of Hostess Brands and the Nutrish pet food line in recent years.
