The Portfolio Move
JustFoodForDogs is expanding its prescription nutrition business with two additions to its Veterinary Support Diet line: a brand-new Digestive Care Low Fat formula and a reformulated Metabolic + Weight Control recipe, both available by veterinarian prescription as of August 17. The move pushes the Tustin, Calif.-based fresh-food brand's therapeutic SKU count to seven, with additional launches planned for early 2027.
The announcements are squarely aimed at the veterinary channel, where clinicians increasingly face demand for palatable, whole-food alternatives to conventional extruded prescription kibble. JustFoodForDogs says all Veterinary Support Diets are formulated by board-certified veterinary nutrition specialists using human-grade ingredients and are tested through independent human-food laboratories to meet or exceed AAFCO nutritional standards — a positioning that differentiates the brand from most legacy prescription-diet manufacturers.
What Changed in Each Recipe
The new Digestive Care Low Fat diet targets dogs with gastrointestinal disorders, including pancreatitis and chronic digestive sensitivities. It features a novel protein source, ultra-low fat content, and moderate fiber levels — the three nutritional levers most commonly dialed in feline and canine GI management protocols. Prescription access is required.
The updated Metabolic + Weight Control formula received a more substantial reformulation. Barley and peas replace previous carbohydrate sources to lower the glycemic index, and turkey liver swaps in for beef liver, converting the recipe to a single-protein formula. That change broadens its clinical application to include dogs requiring nutritional support for diabetes mellitus alongside weight management — conditions that frequently co-present in the overweight canine population. A more diverse fiber profile was also added to support gut health during caloric restriction.
"Nutrition plays a critical role in supporting a dog's health, especially when managing chronic or complex medical conditions," said Dr. Chris Margrey, board-certified veterinary nutritionist and Director of Veterinary Nutrition at JustFoodForDogs. He noted that the fresh-food format helps pet owners stay consistent with prescribed protocols — a persistent compliance challenge for veterinary dietitians managing long-term therapeutic cases.
Market & Channel Context
The fresh and minimally processed pet-food segment has seen sustained retail velocity over the past several years, pulling specialty and independent pet retail alongside grocery and e-commerce channels. The prescription subset of that market remains smaller but strategically important: it creates a veterinary-clinic pull-through dynamic that legacy brands such as Hill's Prescription Diet and Royal Canin Veterinary Diet have historically dominated. JustFoodForDogs is competing for that clinic shelf space by emphasizing palatability and ingredient transparency — attributes that resonate with millennial and Gen Z pet owners who already buy human-grade fresh food for their own households.
For foodservice and hospitality operators running pet-friendly venues, veterinary partnerships, or subscription meal-kit services adjacent to the pet wellness space, the growth of the Rx fresh-food category signals a broader consumer shift toward ingredient-forward nutrition across species lines. The same unit-economics logic that drives premium daypart development in foodservice — higher ticket, recurring visit, loyalty stickiness — applies to prescription diet programs that lock in a recurring purchase tied to a clinical recommendation.
The brand's full therapeutic portfolio now spans Digestive Care Low Fat, Metabolic + Weight Control, Renal Support Low Protein, Hepatic Support Low Fat, Critical Care Support, and two shelf-stable Pantry Fresh formats. JustFoodForDogs also continues to formulate customized therapeutic diets for complex cases in direct collaboration with veterinarians, a service layer that reinforces clinic relationships and supports subscription and direct-to-consumer channel growth across the broader food and beverage network.
