Mars Petcare and Big Idea Ventures have named three ingredient startups to the 2026 Next Generation Pet Food Program, selecting a Polish upcycler, an Indian insect-biotech firm, and a Taiwanese fermentation company from a field of 83 applicants spanning 33 countries. The program, now in its third year, is backed by ingredient and processing partners AAK, Bühler, Givaudan, and Ingredion — a consortium that gives cohort companies direct access to formulation labs, pilot-scale manufacturing, and global procurement networks.

The 2026 Cohort

The three selected ventures each target a different feedstock inefficiency in the existing pet-food supply chain. EcoBean, based in Poland, converts spent coffee grounds from industrial roasting operations into protein- and lipid-rich ingredients suitable for pet and food applications. India's Loopworm uses proprietary silkworm-rearing technology to produce high-performance protein meals and fat fractions — a wet-protein play in a segment where nearly a third of program applicants competed. Taiwan's Space Ark Biomedical combines enzyme technology and precision fermentation to upcycle okara and brewer's spent grain, two high-volume side streams from soy processing and brewing, into functional protein ingredients.

The selection criteria tightened noticeably this cycle. Organizers imposed stricter commercial-maturity requirements, and the applicant pool reflected it: ventures arrived closer to supply-chain readiness than proof-of-concept stage, a shift program managers described as an acceleration in alternative-ingredient innovation across the pet-nutrition category.

Market Context

Pet food is one of the faster-moving segments for alternative proteins, partly because regulatory pathways for novel ingredients are less restrictive than in human food and partly because large manufacturers like Mars have publicly committed to reducing the environmental footprint of their ingredient sourcing. The program's 83-application haul — nearly half from Asia-Pacific — signals that ingredient entrepreneurs in the region see pet nutrition as a viable commercialization route for fermentation and insect-farming technologies that have struggled to gain traction in human food channels.

Elisabetta Pierangelo, VP R&D at Mars Pet Nutrition, framed the program as a de-risking mechanism for the supply chain: the consortium structure lets startups validate technology against real formulation and processing constraints before committing to scale-up capital. Andrew D. Ive, Founder and Managing General Partner at Big Idea Ventures, noted that the ecosystem of strategic partners — not the cash prize alone — is the program's primary value proposition for early-stage ventures. Each cohort company receives $15,000 and tailored R&D support; the larger prize is direct access to the procurement and innovation infrastructure of a $65 billion-plus enterprise in Mars, combined with ingredient-processing expertise from partners such as Ingredion, which reported approximately $7.2 billion in 2025 net sales.

The 2026 cohort will present at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit in Singapore on October 27–29, pitching to industry buyers, investors, and potential area development partners. For foodservice and pet-specialty operators tracking ingredient costs and sustainability claims on finished products, the pipeline of side-stream and insect-derived proteins entering the pet-food supply chain over the next two to three years will likely influence both procurement options and on-pack positioning. Coverage of adjacent alternative-protein developments in food manufacturing and sustainable ingredient sourcing trends continues across the Food & Beverage Magazine network.
