The LTO Play

Miguel's Jr., the 23-unit family-owned Mexican quick-service chain based in Corona, California, is deploying a seasonal tamale LTO and layered gift card promotion across all participating locations beginning November 2, targeting the extended holiday daypart through December 31. The dual program ties a limited-time menu addition to a structured gift card bonus architecture designed to drive both immediate ticket lift and new-year return visits.

The tamale lineup — three SKUs built on 100% stone-ground masa — includes Spicy Chicken, Chile Rojo Pork, and the returning fan-favorite Green Chile & Cheese. Individual pricing runs $3.99 to $4.49 per tamale, with a dozen priced at $43.69, available in single-flavor or half-and-half configurations. The dozen format targets catering and office-party occasions, a channel that regional QSR operators have increasingly leaned into as off-premise volume stabilizes post-pandemic.

Gift Card Mechanics

The gift card structure runs in two windows — November 2 through November 26, and December 1 through December 31 — with a $5 bonus card attached to every $25 in-store purchase and a $10 ebonus card for equivalent online transactions at MiguelsJr.com. The elevated online bonus effectively offers a 40% premium over the in-store incentive, a deliberate channel-mix nudge consistent with broader QSR efforts to migrate loyalty and gifting behavior to owned digital platforms.

For a four-day Black Friday and Cyber Monday window (November 27–30), in-store purchasers receive two $5 bonus cards per $25 gift card — matching the $10 online value parity and compressing margin briefly to compete with general retail gift card promotions during peak consumer spending. All bonus cards are redeemable January 2 through February 28, 2027, effectively pre-loading traffic into what is traditionally a soft daypart period for regional Mexican QSR.

Operator Context

"The holidays are about gathering around the table, and tamales have been at the center of that tradition for generations," said Javier Vasquez, Chief Executive Officer at Miguel's Jr. "Whether they're bringing home a dozen tamales for the family or picking up gift cards for everyone on their list, we're giving them a little something extra to enjoy in the new year."

Founded in 1973 by Mike and Mary Vasquez, Miguel's Restaurants operates 22 quick-service units and one full-service location across the Inland Empire and Orange County. Co-Founder and Chief Recipe Officer Mary Vasquez, whose childhood in Central Mexico informs the chain's homestyle menu, drives recipe development. The tamale program reflects a broader trend among regional Mexican QSR operators using culturally rooted LTOs to differentiate against national taco chains during a period of elevated value competition.
