The Launch

Mission Foods is expanding its Better for You portfolio with four chip SKUs targeting the high-protein and grain-free segments: Mission® Protein Tortilla Style Chips in Chile Limón and Jalapeño, and Mission® Grain Free Tortilla Style Chips in Sea Salt and Hint of Lime. Both lines are rolling out at Kroger and its affiliated banners nationwide, with additional retail distribution slated through fall 2026.

The move marks a meaningful product extension for the Irving, Texas-based manufacturer, which built its North American footprint on tortillas and wraps across more than twenty domestic plants. For foodservice operators and retail-adjacent buyers, the launch signals that Mission is pushing its Better for You platform beyond wraps and into the $25 billion-plus U.S. snack chip category — a space where permissible-indulgence positioning has become a key volume driver.

The Product Specs

The Protein Tortilla Style Chips deliver 10 grams of plant-based protein per serving and carry gluten-free and vegan certifications — attributes that align with growing demand from health-focused consumers across both retail and noncommercial foodservice channels, including college dining and corporate café segments. The Grain Free line is built on 100% cassava flour, whole chia seeds, and avocado oil, with a non-GMO ingredient deck and a good-source-of-fiber claim. Both attributes — high protein and grain-free — rank among the fastest-growing label callouts in the better-for-you snack segment according to category analysts tracking IRI and SPINS data.

"Our Better for You line has always been about giving people trend-setting options that fit their lifestyle and taste great," said Sathish Mohanraju, VP of Sales and Marketing for Mission Foods. "Whether folks are looking for simpler ingredients or a new favorite everyday snack — these new chips are for them."

Retail and Channel Context

The Kroger-first rollout gives Mission immediate scale: Kroger and its affiliates operate roughly 2,700 supermarket locations across 35 states, providing substantial shelf presence from launch. Broader retail expansion is expected before year-end. For foodservice distributors and noncommercial operators, the timing aligns with a broader snack and better-for-you ingredient trend reshaping grab-and-go programs in healthcare, education, and travel venue accounts.

The competitive set is crowded — established brands and emerging challenger labels are both chasing the protein-snack consumer — but Mission's manufacturing scale and existing retailer relationships give it a distribution advantage that most start-up snack brands cannot replicate. Clean-label chip launches have accelerated across the snack and specialty foods category, with cassava-based products in particular gaining velocity as a gluten-free, paleo-adjacent platform. Mission's entry legitimizes the format for mass-market buyers who have been cautious about committing shelf space to smaller suppliers.
