The Play

Mondelēz International (Nasdaq: MDLZ) is adding five collegiate athletic programs to its sports-sponsorship roster, naming itself a Proud Partner of the University of Florida, University of Michigan and University of Southern California, and a Proud Sponsor of the University of Arkansas and University of Texas at Austin Athletics. The deals, facilitated by college-sports media company Learfield, include year-round fan activations, in-venue branding across football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, and hockey, plus NIL agreements with a slate of marquee student-athletes.

The NIL component features USC's JuJu Watkins, Michigan's Trey McKenney and Olivia Olson, Texas's Madison Booker, and Arkansas's Jordan Smith Jr. — a portfolio construction that tracks the snacking giant's broader ambition to reach multicultural households and Gen Z consumers through authentic sports fandom rather than traditional broadcast alone.

Retail Tie-In

The collegiate push is not a pure brand-awareness play. Mondelēz is backing the sponsorships with high-impact game-day displays at regional grocery and mass-market retailers serving the five campus markets, including H-E-B, Publix, Walmart, Meijer, Hy-Vee and Albertsons. Each display centers on a four-SKU snack lineup: OREO Cookies, RITZ Crackers, CHIPS AHOY! Cookies and RITZ Bits — with the limited-time return of football-shaped RITZ crackers timed to the fall season. The move connects in-store merchandising directly to fan activation, a structure that gives category buyers at those chains a clear promotional hook heading into the high-traffic football daypart.

Nick Rogers, Director of Portfolio Marketing & Sponsorships at Mondelēz International, framed the initiative as a natural extension of the brand's gameday positioning. "Mondelēz products have been at the heart of gameday traditions for decades," Rogers said, citing the broader portfolio sweep — OREO, SOUR PATCH KIDS, CHIPS AHOY!, CLIF BAR and RITZ — as the "ultimate snack roster for college sports fans nationwide."

Broader Sports Strategy

The five-school announcement follows Mondelēz's designation as the Official Snacking Sponsor of the Kansas City Chiefs and prior activations tied to the NFL's championship game, Inter Miami CF, and NCAA March Madness. Taken together, those deals sketch a 365-day sports-marketing calendar that keeps the $38.5 billion snacking company's core brands in front of consumers across major live-sports moments — a strategy increasingly common among large CPG players looking to defend shelf velocity against private-label pressure and challenger snack brands.

For foodservice and retail operators in college markets, the practical implication is elevated consumer demand for Mondelēz SKUs around game weeks, and the possibility of co-branded programming at stadium concessions and campus dining — channels where impulse snack placement drives meaningful incremental revenue. The collegiate NIL framework also opens a new activation layer that pure foodservice operators can study: student-athlete endorsements now function as hyper-local influencer marketing, connecting national CPG brands to campus communities in ways that traditional FSI or endcap programs cannot replicate. That convergence of on-campus, in-venue, and in-store touchpoints represents the emerging standard for major CPG sports sponsorship structures.
