The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation has appointed Monica Parrish Trent, PhD as its next Executive Director, the Washington-based nonprofit announced Aug. 27. Dr. Trent steps into the role with more than 25 years spanning higher education, workforce development, and national nonprofit leadership — a profile the Foundation's board viewed as a direct match for its mandate to build career pipelines into the restaurant and foodservice industry.
Her Background
Most recently, Dr. Trent served as Chief Program and Network Officer at Achieving the Dream, where she directed national program and workforce strategy across a network of more than 300 community colleges. Before moving into the national nonprofit sector, she held faculty and executive leadership positions at multi-campus community colleges, work that sharpened her ability to coordinate distributed partner networks and translate strategy into scalable programming. She has also worked in restaurants herself during her student years — a personal connection that informs her read of the industry's workforce dynamics.
"I have spent my career bringing educators, employers, and communities together to strengthen career pathways and help people move from learning to meaningful careers," Dr. Trent said. "Having worked in restaurants while I was a student, I saw firsthand how the industry opens doors for people from a wide spectrum of life experiences and how a job can grow into a lifelong career that supports a family and strengthens a community."
Why the Hire Matters
The NRAEF functions as the philanthropic arm of the National Restaurant Association, supporting programs that the broader industry increasingly relies on to address chronic labor shortfalls. Its portfolio includes ProStart, a high-school career and technical education program; Restaurant Ready/HOPES, which partners with community-based organizations on skills training and job placement; a military transition initiative; scholarships for hospitality degree students; and the Restaurant & Hospitality Leadership Center, which administers accredited apprenticeship programs. Together, those programs represent a significant institutional infrastructure for workforce development in foodservice.
Michelle Korsmo, CEO of the NRAEF, called Dr. Trent "an exceptional leader who cares deeply about the power and opportunity in getting people into the right job," adding that her ability to build partnerships and convey mission will be central to the Foundation's ongoing work connecting young people to restaurant-industry careers.
The timing of the appointment reflects ongoing labor-market pressure across the foodservice segment. The restaurant industry is the nation's second-largest private employer, and operators from quick-service chains to full-service independents have consistently cited workforce recruitment and retention as top operational challenges. Strengthening institutional pipelines — from high school CTE programs through apprenticeship — is increasingly viewed as a structural response to those unit-level pressures, rather than a near-term fix. Dr. Trent's background coordinating multi-stakeholder, distributed networks positions her to manage the NRAEF's complex web of industry, education, and community partners at scale.
