Mobile ordering platform Orda and barcode-scanning hardware maker Socket Mobile (NASDAQ: SCKT) have deployed an integrated self-checkout solution across corporate dining locations in New York City, targeting the fast-growing enterprise workplace dining segment. The live rollout — executed in partnership with contract caterer Great Performances, whose clients include Silverstein Properties and the Rockefeller Foundation — marks the first scaled proof point for a model the companies intend to replicate across campuses, healthcare systems, universities, stadiums, and airports.

How the Stack Works

At the unit level, the workflow is straightforward: guests browse and place orders through Orda's mobile interface, then complete purchases at a self-checkout station powered by Socket Mobile's S320 contactless barcode scanner. The S320 was selected for its compact footprint, API accessibility, and scanning reliability in high-traffic environments. Orda integrates natively with Square and counts more than 10,000 Square-based businesses on its platform, giving the combined solution a broad addressable base in commercial foodservice and contract dining. The platform also connects with DoorDash, Fiserv, and First Data, positioning it for multi-channel enterprise deployments.

Operator Pain Points Driving Adoption

For contract caterers and self-op dining programs, the business case centers on labor efficiency and throughput. Enterprise foodservice operators are contending with persistent front-of-house labor pressure alongside rising expectations from corporate clients investing in employee-amenity programs as return-to-office initiatives continue. Self-checkout deployments reduce cashier headcount requirements at peak dayparts without degrading the guest experience — a trade-off that has proven difficult to execute cleanly with earlier-generation kiosk hardware.

Brandon Reichert, Director of Transformation and Technology at Great Performances, noted that the prior solution was cumbersome for both operators and guests. The Orda Express self-checkout interface allowed site-level customization by client, improving speed and ease of use. That flexibility matters in contract dining, where a single caterer may operate under the brand standards of dozens of corporate clients simultaneously.

Outlook for Enterprise Dining Tech

The workplace dining segment sits at the intersection of two durable trends in foodservice: the operator push toward off-premise and self-service ordering infrastructure, and the corporate-real-estate sector's broader investment in hospitality-grade tenant amenities. As employers compete on workplace experience, on-site dining programs have expanded beyond subsidized cafeterias into curated, tech-enabled food and beverage offerings — a shift that raises the technology bar for contract foodservice operators.

David A. Holmes, President and Chief Executive Officer of Socket Mobile, described the collaboration as opening new addressable markets beyond the company's traditional specialty-retail and field-service base. For Orda, the Great Performances deployment provides a referenceable enterprise account as it pursues area development agreements across corporate real estate, healthcare, and higher education — segments where standardized, scalable ordering and self-checkout stacks are still early in their adoption curve. Both companies characterized the NYC deployments as a repeatable model rather than a one-off integration, signaling pipeline ambitions beyond the initial sites.
