The Deal

PrepWizard, a Boston-area provider of automated food prep labeling and digital operations management software, has secured a strategic investment from 404 Endeavors, a private investment firm that backs technology and tech-enabled services businesses serving restaurants and multi-unit operators. Financial terms were not disclosed. Brown Gibbons Lang & Company (BGL) served as exclusive financial advisor to PrepWizard in the transaction.

Founded in 2019 by Doug Harris alongside his sons Cole and Eli, PrepWizard delivers an end-to-end back-of-house labeling system built around a cloud-based mobile app, integrated Bluetooth printers, and custom-formulated dissolvable and low-adhesive labels. The platform automates use-by-date calculations and label printing — a workflow that remains largely manual and error-prone across much of the foodservice industry — and enforces consistent brand standards across locations. The company's companion product, WorkWizard, extends the platform into digital task management, checklists, audits, and store-level announcements for multi-unit operators.

What 404 Endeavors Brings

The investment is structured to preserve operational continuity: Cole Harris will remain President and Eli Harris will continue as Chief Technology Officer. Both will lead the business alongside the existing team. 404 Endeavors' backing is intended to fund incremental investment in headcount, technology development, and sales capacity — the three levers most early-stage restaurant-tech companies need to scale from proof-of-concept to enterprise-level contracts across large franchise systems.

For 404 Endeavors, PrepWizard fits squarely in its thesis of backing purpose-built software targeting the operational layer of multi-unit restaurant and foodservice businesses. Back-of-house compliance tools — particularly those that reduce labor time and human error around food safety labeling — have attracted consistent investor attention as operators face tighter margins, ongoing labor market pressure, and heightened regulatory scrutiny around food safety documentation.

Operator Context

Food prep labeling sits at the intersection of food safety compliance and labor efficiency, two pressure points that have intensified across the full-service and quick-service segments since 2020. Manual label writing remains a standard practice in a significant share of independent and franchise kitchens, creating inconsistency in date labeling, potential health code exposure, and measurable back-of-house labor drag. Automated labeling platforms have gained traction with larger chains, but the mid-market and franchisee tiers remain underpenetrated — a gap PrepWizard has targeted since its founding.

The deal also reflects broader momentum in restaurant technology investment, where specialized vertical-software platforms serving the foodservice and hospitality sectors continue to attract private capital despite a more selective dealmaking environment. BGL's Restaurant & Retail Software investment banking team, which advised PrepWizard, has tracked a steady pipeline of similar transactions as operators seek to digitize back-of-house workflows that have historically resisted automation.
