Reser's Fine Foods is rolling out a new High Protein Deli Salad line across major grocery retailers nationwide, targeting a Gen Z cohort that its own commissioned research says is eating more protein than ever — but finding the options monotonous.
The three-SKU launch includes Chicken Salad (15g of protein per serving), Tuna Salad (12g per serving), and Egg Salad (11g per serving). Each variety uses a smoothly blended cottage cheese base as the dressing foundation, which Reser's says delivers 25% more protein and 40–60% fewer calories compared to its traditional deli salad recipes. The products are now available in the deli section and extend the Beaverton, Ore.-based manufacturer's existing refrigerated prepared-foods portfolio, which includes Deviled Egg Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, and Cole Slaw.
The Research Behind the Launch
Reser's backed the product development with a Pollfish survey of 1,000 U.S. consumers aged 16–29 conducted in September 2026. The data points are striking for foodservice and retail deli buyers alike: half of Gen Z respondents said they are eating more protein today than two years ago, yet 95% report craving more variety in their protein sources. Some 87% said they would prefer high-protein versions of familiar foods — precisely the brief Reser's used to reformulate classic deli staples rather than introduce unfamiliar formats.
"People are looking for easy ways to add protein into their day and want something more interesting than another protein shake or chicken breast," said Megan Torres, senior brand strategy manager for Reser's. The cottage cheese base is the key formulation lever: it adds protein density without the textural trade-offs of whey isolates or the caloric load of full-fat mayonnaise-heavy dressings.
Operator and Retail Implications
For foodservice distributors and retail deli operators, the launch sits squarely inside one of the refrigerated prepared-foods category's fastest-moving trends. High-protein positioning has migrated from sports nutrition into everyday center-of-plate and grab-and-go occasions — a shift that is pressuring both deli prepared foods suppliers and foodservice operators to reformulate legacy items rather than wait for consumer habits to moderate.
Reser's operates 14 manufacturing facilities across the U.S. and Mexico and employs more than 5,000 people, giving it the scale to supply both the supermarket and foodservice channels simultaneously. Its brand portfolio — Reser's American Classics, Main St Bistro, Stonemill Kitchens, and Don Pancho — spans retail, club store, and institutional customers. The High Protein line enters under the Reser's American Classics umbrella, the company's most visible retail deli flag.
For deli buyers, the cottage cheese reformulation is a credible bridge between the clean-label movement and the protein-density expectations Gen Z has internalized from years of macro-tracking. Whether the format translates into a foodservice bulk or portion-pack SKU for chain sandwich programs or college dining operators is a logical next step the company has not yet confirmed publicly.
