The Opening

Rural King added its fifth Georgia location with the opening of a new unit in Brunswick, expanding the Mattoon, Illinois-based farm-and-home retailer's footprint to more than 150 stores across 17 states. The Brunswick store at 300 Mall Blvd. represents a continued push into the Southeast for the family-owned chain, which has operated since 1960.

Grand-opening events run September 18–20, with promotional pricing across categories and a sweepstakes offering four $500 gift cards to new RK Rewards enrollees. The loyalty-program push is consistent with Rural King's broader effort to capture repeat basket spend across its wide general-merchandise and food assortment.

What's on the Shelf

From a foodservice and grocery perspective, the Brunswick unit carries branded consumables including Black Rifle Coffee Company product lines and Walnut Creek Foods alongside the chain's staple feed, seed, and animal nutrition SKUs — a mix that positions Rural King as a hybrid general-merchandise and food-and-beverage destination for rural and exurban shoppers. The store also stocks grilling supplies and a broad snack-and-food section, daypart-agnostic categories that increasingly drive impulse traffic in farm-store formats.

Susan Samuelson, Senior Vice President of Merchandising, framed the Brunswick entry as a community-integration play. "We look forward to serving customers throughout the area with the wide selection, everyday value and friendly service Rural King has been known for more than 65 years," she said. The unit includes mobile and self-checkout options, modernizations the chain has been rolling out to improve throughput without sacrificing its service-oriented floor culture.

Competitive Context

Rural King's Southeast expansion comes as farm-and-ranch retailers face a competitive landscape that includes Tractor Supply Company's roughly 2,200-unit network and regional players angling for the same rural-lifestyle consumer. For foodservice suppliers, rural-format retailers represent a growing indirect channel: their food, beverage, and snack sets serve communities underserved by conventional grocery and convenience-store infrastructure, making assortment decisions at the category level consequential for brands seeking rural distribution reach.

The chain's 150-plus stores across Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and 14 other states give branded food and beverage manufacturers a scaled but targeted route to rural households. Inclusion in Rural King's standard planogram — particularly in high-velocity categories like coffee, packaged snacks, and grilling consumables — can meaningfully move case volume without the slotting friction of traditional grocery chains. Operators and suppliers tracking rural-channel expansion should note that Rural King's unit growth, while measured, has been consistent across the Southeast corridor.
