Category Expansion
Saint James Iced Tea is moving beyond its core ready-to-drink tea portfolio with the launch of Saint James Yerba Mate, a certified organic, non-GMO line entering one of the fastest-growing segments in functional beverages. The debut marks the brand's first product line outside its nine-SKU iced tea range and arrives as total U.S. distribution crosses 25,000 retail doors across the U.S. and Canada.
The new line ships in three 16-oz. resealable aluminum bottle flavors — Mango Passionfruit, Raspberry Lemon, and Strawberry Tangerine — each delivering 150mg of natural caffeine, 20–25 calories, and 3–4g of sugar. Ethically sourced leaves from ilex paraguariensis in South America anchor a natural compound stack that includes caffeine, polyphenols, and theobromine, which the brand positions as a smoother, longer-lasting energy profile than synthetic alternatives. The 12-pack carries a $39.99 suggested retail price on Amazon and the brand's direct-to-consumer site, with brick-and-mortar distribution rolling through Kroger and Albertsons banners targeting more than 7,500 doors by end of 2026.
Growth Backdrop
The yerba mate launch is the most visible signal yet of Saint James's accelerating retail push. The brand reported 164% year-over-year growth in August 2026, a pace that has been fueled by a series of distribution wins this month alone. A nationwide Costco launch featuring an exclusive Red Raspberry and Classic Mango variety pack added meaningful club-channel volume, while a partnership with fast-casual chain Just Salad placed Saint James's traditional iced tea SKUs in all 120 Just Salad domestic locations — a foodservice on-premise beachhead that could support daypart frequency among the lunch and dinner crowd. For operators tracking better-for-you beverage programs, that kind of branded RTD integration at fast-casual counters reflects a broader shift away from fountain-only pour toward curated bottled options with cleaner ingredient decks.
Co-founder and co-CEO Brenden Cohen framed the new line as a functional extension of existing consumer behavior rather than a category pivot: "Our consumers already turn to Saint James as part of their daily routine, so creating a more functional option was the next logical step." The brand carries the backing of John M. Ferolito, a co-founder of AriZona Iced Tea, whose distribution experience in the RTD beverage segment is a material operational asset as Saint James scales shelf placement.
Marketing and Outlook
To drive consumer pull-through, Saint James is running its first multi-celebrity national campaign alongside the yerba mate launch, featuring NHL star Jack Hughes, former NFL wide receiver and media personality Victor Cruz, and entrepreneur Isabela Rangel Grutman. The 360-degree effort spans out-of-home placements, consumer sampling programs, and college athlete ambassador activations through fall — a flywheel designed to build trial among the active-lifestyle and young-professional cohorts that anchor the functional beverage category.
For foodservice and retail buyers, the yerba mate entry is worth watching in the context of category dynamics. The U.S. yerba mate segment has grown sharply in recent years, driven by consumers migrating away from high-sugar energy drinks toward cleaner caffeine sources. Brands like Guayakí have occupied significant shelf space, but operator interest in differentiated RTD options continues to create openings for credentialed newcomers. Saint James's organic certification and low-sugar positioning align with menu transparency standards increasingly required by chain accounts. Further retail and fast-casual foodservice expansion deals are likely as the brand moves toward its 7,500-door target for the yerba mate line before year-end.
