The Deal
Sargento, the Plymouth, Wisconsin-based family-owned company and the No. 1 branded natural cheese producer in the U.S., has acquired La Terra Fina, a maker of premium dairy-based dips, spreads and quiches distributed through grocery and club-deli channels. The transaction brings approximately 250 employees into the Sargento organization and expands the company's addressable footprint well beyond its core cheese case. No financial terms were disclosed by either privately held entity.
Founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1983, La Terra Fina had operated as a private affiliate of Catamount Management Corporation since 2015. The brand occupies a distinct position in refrigerated deli sets — a channel that has attracted sustained retailer investment as operators and grocers work to differentiate prepared and specialty departments from center-store competition. For Sargento, the acquisition represents a calculated move into an adjacent premium dairy category where brand equity and cold-chain distribution capabilities translate directly.
New Structure and Leadership
The deal triggers a formal restructuring of Sargento's operating model into three business units: the newly formed Deli Business Unit, Consumer Products, and Food Service & Ingredients (FSI). Erin Price has been named General Manager of the Deli Business Unit, responsible for integrating La Terra Fina, building out Sargento's broader deli strategy, and driving performance within the company's three-year rolling strategic plan. Price brings more than 20 years of CPG experience and previously served as Sargento's General Manager of Consumer Products, Food Service & Ingredients and Vice President of Strategic Planning. La Terra Fina President and CEO Stephen Cottrell and the existing La Terra Fina leadership team will report to her.
Jeremy Schellin has been elevated to General Manager of Consumer Products, the unit that markets Sargento-branded natural cheese slices, shreds, chunks and snacks — including Balanced Breaks snacks and Sargento Natural American Cheese — through grocery and retail nationwide. Schellin previously led the FSI business unit, where he oversaw a record $500 million in net sales, the first time in the division's 40-year history it crossed that threshold. Joy Judski has been appointed Interim General Manager of Food Service & Ingredients, which supplies restaurants, food manufacturers and distributors with natural cheese, customized products and culinary innovation. Judski will continue leading FSI Sales while the company searches for a permanent successor.
What It Means for Foodservice
Sargento's FSI division is a meaningful supplier across the commercial foodservice channel, and the leadership transition there warrants attention from operators and distributors who rely on the unit for customized cheese products and packaging. The company's decision to install an interim GM rather than promote from within signals that the Schellin-to-Cottrell succession was not pre-staged — buyers and procurement teams managing active contracts should expect business continuity under Judski's oversight but should monitor for a permanent appointment.
More broadly, the La Terra Fina acquisition reflects a durable trend among large dairy ingredient and branded-cheese suppliers diversifying into higher-margin refrigerated prepared foods. The club and grocery deli segment has drawn increased supplier investment as foodservice-quality SKUs — ready-to-heat quiches, restaurant-style dips — migrate into retail prepared departments, blurring the line between grocery and foodservice channel competition. For chain operators and contract feeders sourcing premium deli applications, a Sargento-backed La Terra Fina could represent both a new vendor relationship and a competitive benchmark in the dairy ingredients and specialty cheese category. Louie Gentine, third-generation Chairman and CEO of Sargento, framed the move as a generational growth initiative, emphasizing the La Terra Fina brand's existing consumer base as a net-new entry point for the Sargento portfolio.
