The Hire
Tractor Beverage Company, the farmer-founded, employee-owned organic beverage brand, has appointed Clay Lichterman as Senior Vice President of Sales, effective immediately. Lichterman reports to Chief Revenue Officer John Murphy and takes the helm of channel expansion for a brand that has appeared on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies for five consecutive years, including 2026.
Operator Credentials
Lichterman's background sets him apart from a conventional sales hire. He began working in commercial kitchens at age 12 and later ran kitchens as a working chef — experience that gives him direct familiarity with the cost pressures, vendor trust dynamics, and operational tempo that define the restaurant industry. Over the course of his career he has guided four companies through foodservice channel entry, building sales teams, crafting area development and distribution strategies, and cultivating long-term operator relationships. That resume maps closely to Tractor's core go-to-market challenge: converting restaurant operators who remain cautious about premium organic beverage SKUs on fountain and in canned formats.
"He's been in the kitchen, he's built customer relationships, and he knows how to help a brand grow," said Murphy. "Clay brings an operator's perspective to a company built around giving operators something meaningful to serve."
Channel Context
Tractor launched in foodservice more than a decade ago and built its initial volume base through on-premise restaurant partnerships, positioning USDA Certified Organic fountain beverages as a differentiated alternative to conventional carbonated soft drinks. Its current portfolio spans organic fountain beverages, lemonades, teas, and fruit-forward refreshers, plus Haymaker — an organic apple cider vinegar sparkling tonic available in cans through both foodservice and retail. Haymaker claimed a 2026 NEXTY Award for its Apricot Peach flavor and swept the 2026 FABI Awards across all four varieties, with Citrus Ginger earning FABI Favorite recognition.
The awards carry practical weight in a foodservice sales context: buyers at independent and chain accounts increasingly lean on third-party validation when introducing premium beverage programs. Tractor's Organic Impact Tracker — which quantifies acres of organic farmland supported and synthetic pesticides avoided — also gives operators a guest-facing narrative that aligns with growing consumer interest in supply-chain transparency, a trend well-documented across the better-for-you and farm-to-table segments.
Licherman framed the tool as a commercial asset. "The Organic Impact Tracker makes that commitment tangible, giving operators something to share with guests that connects the beverages they serve to the organic farmland they support," he said. "That's a powerful story to bring to the table."
For foodservice operators weighing premium beverage programs, the broader backdrop is favorable: the organic food and beverage segment has sustained consistent volume gains even as operators face elevated labor and food costs. Beverage remains one of the highest-margin categories in the restaurant P&L, and brands that can demonstrate consumer pull alongside supply-chain credibility are finding receptive audiences among multi-unit buyers. Tractor's existing restaurant partnerships and its Inc. 5000 growth track suggest the distribution infrastructure to support Lichterman's mandate. His near-term task will be translating that momentum into new account signings and deeper penetration at existing operator partners — the kind of franchise and multi-unit development work that determines whether a challenger beverage brand achieves scale or plateaus. Broader beverage and foodservice trends point to sustained operator appetite for differentiated, on-trend drink programs that command menu price premiums.
