Leadership Transition

The Vitamin Shoppe has promoted Jack Gayton to Senior Vice President, Merchandising, effective immediately, filling the top merchant seat vacated by President Muriel Gonzalez, who announced her retirement after more than four decades in retail. Gayton will report directly to Chief Executive Officer Sharon Leite and take full ownership of the company's merchant and product development organization across its 640-plus stores.

Gayton joined the Secaucus, New Jersey-based specialty retailer in 2019 and has steadily expanded his footprint within the merchant team. His tenure has been defined by landing first-to-market launches and exclusive arrangements with brands including Barebells, GHOST, David Protein, Gorilla Mind, RAW Nutrition, and Transparent Labs — a portfolio that has positioned the chain as a preferred launch partner in the sports nutrition and functional wellness segment.

The Merchandising Playbook

"The health, wellness, and sports performance categories are evolving in many new directions, creating significant opportunities for The Vitamin Shoppe," Gayton said. "My mission is to anticipate what customers will want next and bring the most compelling new ideas to market." His mandate spans proprietary brand development — the retailer operates seven house labels including BodyTech, plnt, and True Athlete — alongside third-party assortment curation and brand partnership strategy.

As part of the restructured merchandising organization, David DiTota has been promoted to Vice President, Divisional Merchandise Manager, reporting to Gayton. DiTota brings more than two decades of merchandising experience across national retail and technology companies and will focus on third-party category management and high-growth wellness segments.

What It Means for the Channel

The leadership reset comes as specialty nutrition retail faces mounting pressure from mass and club channels expanding their supplement and functional food sets. For foodservice-adjacent operators — cafeterias, fitness-club F&B programs, corporate wellness accounts — The Vitamin Shoppe's aggressive exclusive-brand strategy directly affects what emerging supplement and on-the-go functional food brands appear on shelves versus remaining available to non-retail channels. Brands such as Clean Simple Eats and MaryRuth's that earn Vitamin Shoppe exclusivity windows can see constrained availability for institutional buyers during those periods, a dynamic worth tracking for wellness-focused foodservice operators building out their grab-and-go or supplement programs.

Leite characterized Gonzalez's contribution as instrumental to the chain's merchant-led repositioning since 2020, crediting her with sharpening the proprietary brand pipeline and deepening supplier relationships central to the retailer's differentiation. For context on how specialty supplement retail intersects with on-premise functional beverage trends, Gayton's push into first-to-market launches mirrors strategies playing out across gym-café and sports-club foodservice formats that are chasing the same brand-conscious, performance-nutrition consumer.
