Seven years after the chicken sandwich wars reshaped drive-thru traffic patterns across the QSR segment, A&W Restaurants is entering the conversation with its first-ever Crispy Chicken Sandwich — a hand-breaded filet the chain says required years of recipe development before it was ready for the menu board.
The new lineup rolls out at participating locations across A&W's 900-plus-unit system spanning 35 U.S. states and Asia. Three SKUs will be available: the base Crispy, a Deluxe with lettuce and tomato, and a Nashville Hot as a limited-time offer. To generate trial velocity at the unit level, the chain will run a buy one, get one free promotion on all three variants from August 17 through August 23, upon request at the register.
The Menu Play
For a legacy QSR brand built on root beer floats and burgers, adding a credible chicken sandwich is a meaningful daypart and check-average lever. Chicken sandwiches have become one of the highest-velocity SKUs in fast food — a direct driver of traffic counts and afternoon daypart sales — and late entry carries both risk and opportunity. Competitors including Chick-fil-A, Popeyes, and McDonald's have spent years establishing consumer loyalty in the segment, but the category remains large enough that incremental share gains can move the needle on AUV.
"For the last seven years, chicken sandwich fans have been picking sides, and we've been behind-the-scenes perfecting our Crispy Chicken Sandwich recipe," said Betsy Schmandt, CEO and President of A&W Restaurants. "We know chicken sandwich loyalties run deep, but we believe one bite will win fans over."
Franchise System Context
The launch carries particular weight for A&W's franchisee base. The chain operates more than 600 single-brand restaurants alongside roughly 230 co-branded locations paired with KFC or Long John Silver's. For single-brand operators, a proven chicken sandwich platform could meaningfully lift lunch and dinner entree attachment rates and help close the ticket-size gap against chicken-centric competitors. A BOGO window is an established trial-generation tactic in QSR — it depresses net revenue for the promotional week but is designed to convert first-time occasion buyers into repeat traffic.
The brand is pairing the product launch with a consumer engagement campaign at AWAllegiance.com, where guests can submit a loyalty pledge for a chance to be featured on a digital display wall. While the activation is consumer-facing, the underlying data collection aligns with broader industry trends toward first-party audience development as third-party signals become less reliable for franchise marketing co-ops.
Founded in 1919, A&W holds the distinction of being America's oldest franchised restaurant chain — a heritage positioning that the brand has leaned into as it competes for relevance in an increasingly crowded QSR landscape.
