The Appointment

Buyers Edge Platform has named Sam Peterson Chief Technology Officer, effective October 12, 2026, tapping a veteran of AI-first engineering overhauls to sharpen the foodservice procurement network's technology edge. Peterson steps into the role as BEP intensifies its push to convert data from more than $100 billion in annual purchasing activity into actionable value for the operators, distributors, and manufacturers on its platform.

Peterson arrives from Renaissance Inc., a philanthropic-services fintech, where he served as CTO and rebuilt the engineering organization around AI-first delivery — including standing up an AI Governance Council to manage responsible adoption at scale. Before that, he held executive technology and product leadership roles at Truckstop, Metrc, and Boats Group, where he led platform consolidation and international acquisition integration ahead of a successful exit. His résumé also includes 14 years at Overstock.com, where he rose from the company's first software developer to Senior Vice President and CTO overseeing a 650-person technology, product, and program organization.

What He Brings

For BEP, the hire is as much about data velocity as it is about engineering headcount. Peterson's background building marketplace data products at Boats Group and Truckstop maps directly onto BEP's core value proposition: translating purchasing-volume visibility into savings and supply-chain intelligence for foodservice operators. "Buyers Edge Platform's visibility into more than $100 billion in annual purchasing across 350,000 foodservice locations is the richest foundation I've had to work with," Peterson said in a statement.

John Davie, CEO of Buyers Edge Platform, framed the appointment as central to the company's product roadmap. "Sam brings a rare combination of deep engineering expertise, proven AI transformation experience, and a track record of building teams that deliver," Davie said. Peterson will oversee BEP's technology and engineering organization, AI-enabled product innovation, and go-to-market solution delivery across all divisions.

Industry Backdrop

The hire lands as AI-assisted procurement tools are moving from pilot to standard practice across the foodservice supply chain. Group purchasing organizations and digital procurement networks are under mounting pressure from operators seeking real-time pricing intelligence, automated contract compliance, and predictive supply disruption alerts — capabilities that require sustained engineering investment rather than off-the-shelf software. BEP's portfolio — spanning its Digital Procurement Network, Fresh Services, Software Solutions, and Supply Chain Management divisions — positions the company to compete directly with emerging procurement-tech challengers entering the foodservice channel.

For multi-unit operators and large institutional feeders evaluating GPO partnerships, C-suite technology leadership signals platform stability and a credible product roadmap. Peterson's mandate to accelerate delivery speed and reduce costs aligns with the unit-economics pressure operators have faced through persistent food-cost inflation and labor constraints. Expect BEP's AI roadmap to draw heightened scrutiny from distribution and supply-chain partners watching how the platform deploys its purchasing-data asset.
