The Operator Swap
Genesis House, the Genesis Motor flagship experiential space in New York's Meatpacking District, is replacing Restaurant Associates as its culinary operator, bringing in Hand Hospitality to relaunch the restaurant under a new concept later this fall. The change marks the first significant food-and-beverage repositioning at the venue since it opened in November 2021.
The restaurant will go dark beginning this month for the transition. The broader Genesis House showroom — including programming, cultural exhibitions, and a display of vehicles including the newly introduced GV90 flagship SUV — will remain open to guests throughout the closure period.
Hand Hospitality's Track Record
Founded in New York City in 2011 by Kihyun Lee, Hand Hospitality has built one of the city's more distinctive portfolios of Korean and Korean-Japanese dining, spanning casual and fine-dining dayparts. Its current roster includes Jua, Cho Dang Gol, Okdongsik, Joo Ok, Hojokban, Seoul Salon, and Her Name Is Han, among others — concepts that have collectively positioned the group as a credible curatorial voice in New York's competitive upscale Korean dining segment.
Beyond running its own restaurants, Hand operates as a hospitality consultancy, advising chefs, restaurateurs, and brands on operations, menu development, branding, and hospitality strategy. That consulting infrastructure likely made the group an attractive partner for Genesis Motor, which is seeking a culinary program that reinforces its "Son-nim" — or honored-guest — brand philosophy without requiring the automaker to manage food-and-beverage operations directly.
"We are deeply honored to join Genesis House on this new journey, bringing our unique culinary perspective to this iconic space to bridge rich Korean traditions with the dynamic energy of contemporary New York City," said Alex Park, director of Hand Hospitality.
What It Means for Experiential Dining
The deal reflects a broader pattern in experiential hospitality, where non-restaurant brands — automakers, luxury retailers, cultural institutions — have leaned into curated food-and-beverage programming as a guest-acquisition and brand-differentiation tool. For Genesis, the restaurant is not a revenue center in the traditional sense; it functions as an extended test drive for the brand's Korean cultural identity, making operator selection a brand-positioning decision as much as an operational one.
Restaurant Associates, the Compass Group–owned contract foodservice operator that has run the Genesis House kitchen since 2021, departs after nearly five years. Compass-managed accounts of this type — high-profile, single-unit, brand-adjacent venues — have become an increasingly competitive niche within the contract foodservice segment, with hospitality groups like Hand offering a more bespoke alternative to large managed-services providers.
Tedros Mengiste, chief operating officer of Genesis Motor North America, credited Restaurant Associates' team with establishing the venue's culinary reputation and acknowledged the transition is a deliberate step forward rather than a course correction. Additional menu and concept details are expected in the coming months ahead of the fall reopening.
