Heineken USA is embedding responsible-consumption infrastructure directly into the reservation funnel, announcing a pilot partnership with OpenTable that allows diners to designate a driver at the point of booking and unlock perks for that driver — a first for the platform and a meaningful touchpoint for on-premise operators navigating the growing no- and low-alcohol occasion.

The program, an extension of Heineken USA's existing There's No Such Thing As Fine to Drive initiative, launches July 31 and runs through October 4 across ten Houston restaurants, including multiple Federal American Grill and Goode Company Seafood locations, Morton's Houston Downtown, Morton's Houston Galleria, and Truluck's Ocean's Finest Seafood & Crab.

The Survey Case

The partnership is anchored in consumer research conducted by Heineken USA in April 2026 across a nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults 21 and older, with a parallel 1,000-person Houston-specific panel. Nationally, 71% of respondents said they would be more likely to arrange a safe ride home if prompted at the time of reservation — a behavioral gap that the OpenTable integration is designed to close. Separately, 57% acknowledged that designated-driver planning is not part of their typical reservation process, and 64% said they would volunteer to be the DD more often if venues covered their non-alcoholic drinks.

Houston data sharpened the urgency: 34% of local respondents admitted they had previously underestimated their level of intoxication before getting behind the wheel, and 36% had driven after drinking because they considered themselves the "most sober" person in the group — underscoring why Heineken USA chose the car-dependent Texas market as its test bed.

Operator and Channel Implications

For on-premise operators, the mechanics are straightforward. Guests booking through a dedicated Heineken-OpenTable landing page designate a driver in advance. Select designated drivers receive a $25 gift card toward Heineken 0.0 for the evening and, upon completing a post-experience survey, a $100 rideshare voucher through SafeRides.org — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has facilitated more than 300,000 safe rides since 2003. The program runs Friday through Sunday each weekend during the pilot window.

The no- and low-alcohol segment has become a material revenue line for full-service operators, and Heineken 0.0 is central to Heineken USA's positioning in that space. Nationwide, 49% of survey respondents said drinking non-alcoholic beer helps them feel included in social moments when they are abstaining — a data point that reinforces the category's role in table-turn economics and check averages. An additional 82% said they enjoy drinking occasions more when a safe-ride plan is already in place, suggesting that removing friction around the DD role could increase overall party spend.

"By elevating the DD experience, we want to raise awareness that opting out of alcohol doesn't mean opting out of the fun," said Anne de Graaf, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at HEINEKEN USA. Reece Jones, General Manager of OpenTable Media, framed the collaboration as part of the platform's broader effort to connect diners and restaurants through tailored media solutions.

If the Houston pilot demonstrates measurable lift in DD designation rates and Heineken 0.0 trial, Heineken USA would have a replicable model for scaling the reservation-integrated approach to other drive-dependent metro markets. For full-service operators evaluating no/low programming, the pilot offers a manufacturer-funded template for building the occasion into the guest journey before they ever walk through the door.
