The Hire
The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) has appointed Mark Ibbotson Executive Vice President and Chief Store Operations Officer, effective September 14, adding a seasoned omnichannel operator to the senior team of a grocer that serves more than 11 million customers daily across its family of banner names.
Ibbotson arrives after a combined two-plus decades at Asda and Walmart U.S., where he built a track record running store portfolios at a scale few retail executives can match. CEO Greg Foran, himself a former Walmart executive, framed the hire squarely around operational simplification and frontline performance. "He knows what it takes to simplify complex operations, bring out the best in frontline teams, and build the digital and physical capabilities that win with customers," Foran said, calling the appointment central to Kroger's push to become "America's Best Grocer."
Ibbotson's Operational Pedigree
Ibbotson started his retail career in the United Kingdom, joining Asda in 2004 after earlier roles at Sainsbury's. He rose through Loss Prevention Director, Productivity Director, and Retail Director before becoming Asda's Chief Operating Officer — a post that put him over hundreds of stores while he drove efficiency gains and introduced the grocer's click-and-collect and drive-through pickup formats.
In 2015 he moved to Walmart U.S. as Senior Vice President of Innovation, tasked with simplifying store operations and deploying new technologies for customer and associate productivity. His scope expanded into Executive Vice President of Central Operations and Realty, a portfolio that included store operations, real estate, asset protection, and a central role in architecting Walmart's grocery eCommerce business — the pickup-and-delivery infrastructure that became a pillar of the chain's omnichannel strategy. He also supported the build-out of Walmart Academies, the company's scaled associate training program. Ibbotson departed Walmart in 2020 and has since consulted for retail and technology companies while serving as a Senior Advisor to McKinsey & Company.
What It Means for Kroger
For Kroger, the appointment is a signal that store-level execution and digital-physical convergence remain top strategic priorities in a grocery segment where comp-sales momentum increasingly depends on seamless off-premise fulfillment — pickup, delivery, and the associate workflows that underpin both. Large-format conventional grocery faces persistent pressure on store-level margin from elevated labor costs and competitive pricing moves by mass and discount rivals, making operational efficiency a critical lever alongside AUV growth.
Kroger's eCommerce business has expanded meaningfully in recent years, but integrating fulfillment into physical store operations at scale requires the kind of cross-functional muscle Ibbotson demonstrated at Walmart. His appointment complements Kroger's ongoing investments in fresh, private-label value, and digital loyalty — the three pillars Ibbotson himself cited in his first public statement on the role. Foran and Ibbotson's shared Walmart lineage also points to a leadership team with aligned instincts around operational discipline and technology-enabled store productivity.
The move comes as conventional grocers broadly reassess supply chain and in-store labor strategies to protect margins against cost inflation and shifting consumer shopping patterns. Operators across the foodservice and grocery spectrum are also investing in workforce development and training infrastructure — an area where Ibbotson has direct experience through the Walmart Academies initiative.
