The Retail Push
Laird Superfood, Inc. (NYSE American: LSF) is placing its functional coffee and creamer portfolio into more than 1,000 Walmart doors nationwide, the brand announced August 4. The rollout includes Perform Coffee, Focus Coffee, K-Cup formats of both blends, and the brand's newest SKU — Protein Creamer with Lion's Mane + CognatiQ® — marking one of the company's most significant single-retailer expansions to date.
For a better-for-you beverage brand competing in a crowded functional coffee segment, mass-channel shelf space at this scale represents a meaningful distribution milestone. Walmart's reach into value-oriented and rural markets extends LSF's addressable consumer base well beyond the specialty and natural grocery channels where adaptogenic coffees have historically found their footing.
Product Portfolio
Perform Coffee leads with a medium-roast Peruvian single-origin base blended with four organic functional mushroom extracts — chaga, lion's mane, maitake, and cordyceps — positioned for energy and antioxidant support. Focus Coffee uses the same high-altitude Peruvian bean sourcing but layers in lion's mane, coffee cherry extract, and rhodiola root, targeting cognitive sharpness and stress management. Both are available as ground coffee and in K-Cup format, a format decision that directly addresses at-home single-serve penetration, which remains a dominant morning-occasion channel across Walmart's core shopper base.
The Protein Creamer is the portfolio's newest entry and its most ingredient-forward offering. Built on a coconut milk powder base — rich in medium-chain triglycerides — the product delivers 12 grams of plant-based protein per serving via a pea, hemp, and pumpkin seed blend. Functional differentiation comes from lion's mane, CognatiQ® coffee fruit extract (studied for sustained alertness support), and Aquamin®, a seaweed-derived mineral complex supplying bioavailable calcium and more than 72 trace minerals. The formulation reflects an emerging trend in the functional beverage and creamer space — stacking cognitive and performance benefits into a single, multipurpose morning SKU.
Category Context
The functional coffee segment has accelerated sharply in recent years as consumers look to consolidate supplement and coffee habits into a single daily ritual. Adaptogenic and mushroom-infused coffees occupy a sub-segment that remains fragmented, with brands including Four Sigmatic and Mud/Wtr competing on ingredient transparency and lifestyle positioning. Laird Superfood's move into Walmart at scale signals a maturing of the category — a transition from premium specialty positioning toward mainstream, everyday accessibility.
For foodservice-adjacent operators and category buyers, the Walmart rollout offers a useful read on where functional morning beverages are heading at retail. Office and hospitality channels sourcing premium coffee and creamer programs should monitor how mass-market validation of adaptogenic SKUs shapes consumer expectation for similar offerings in away-from-home settings.
Co-founders Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reece framed the expansion as a mission-driven accessibility play, noting that the brand's ingredient standard — products they would use themselves and give to family — guides distribution decisions. The company has not disclosed terms of the Walmart agreement or projected revenue contribution from the new doors.
