[Pret A Manger is staging a one-day traffic driver on Sept. 9, offering U.S. customers a complimentary Pick Your Pair meal when they walk into a participating shop wearing the jersey of any retired athlete — timed deliberately to the opening weekend of the professional football season. The promotion is limited to dine-in and takeout and excludes Pret Pick Up, delivery, and third-party platforms, keeping the transaction entirely in-store and off aggregator margin.

The Menu & Mechanics

The deal anchors a broader LTO called the Fresh Out of Retirement menu, which resurrects four items from the chain's archives: the Prosciutto & Parmesan Sourdough Baguette (reformulated on new artisanal sourdough bread), the Chicken Caesar Baguette, the Cobb Side Salad, and the Caesar Side Salad. All four sit inside Pret's existing $9.99 Pick Your Pair bundle, a value construct the chain has been using to drive attach rates across its sandwich-and-side daypart. The complimentary promotion requires that at least one of the two selections come from the Fresh Out of Retirement lineup, steering trial toward the new-old items rather than the full menu.

Felipe Athayde, President of Pret A Manger North America, framed the nostalgia play as a deliberate extension of earlier menu strategy. "After the overwhelming guest feedback we received from our 2016 Rewind menu earlier this year, we knew the appetite for nostalgia had only just begun," Athayde said. "We've refreshed our Prosciutto & Parmesan Baguette with our new artisanal sourdough bread. As part of our $9.99 Pick Your Pair offer, we're excited to give guests an accessible way to rediscover familiar favorites."

Operator Context

The promotion is geographically concentrated — participating shops span New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Philadelphia, Pret's core U.S. urban markets — which limits systemwide cost exposure while targeting the lunch-crowd density those corridors deliver on a Tuesday. That selectivity is consistent with how limited-footprint fast-casual chains typically structure high-visibility giveaways: cap redemption risk by market, maximize earned-media lift per unit.

The nostalgia-menu tactic is well-worn across the fast-casual and QSR segments. Operators from burger chains to sandwich concepts have leaned on archive revivals to generate low-cost menu news, particularly in a period when commodities and labor costs are compressing store-level margins across the industry. For Pret — which operates more than 730 shops across 21 markets globally and leans asset-light in the U.S. relative to its U.K. footprint — the campaign also reinforces the $9.99 bundle as a traffic anchor without discounting the broader menu.

The Fresh Out of Retirement items are available now through regular service; the jersey-wearing free-meal offer is strictly a Sept. 9 event, while supplies last.
