The Retail Push
Sunshine Buns, the Utah-based premium frozen cinnamon roll brand, has landed shelf space at Target stores nationwide and closed a $7 million Series A funding round, the company announced Oct. 27. The twin developments represent the most significant commercial milestone yet for the brand, which only began as home-baked orders out of Utah in 2022 before opening a storefront and quickly scaling beyond its home state.
The Target placement follows earlier distribution wins that include Southern California Costco warehouses and a roster of regional grocers — Hy-Vee, United Supermarkets, Harmons, New Seasons Market, Gelson's, and Bristol Farms among them. At least one additional national grocery retailer is slated to come on board later this fall, according to the company, signaling that the brand's retail velocity is outpacing what many early-stage frozen-food startups achieve in their first few years.
The Numbers
The $7 million Series A will be deployed across production capacity, inventory build, marketing, new product development, and headcount — the standard four-pillar spend for a CPG brand moving from regional proof-of-concept to national scale. Management did not disclose current AUV per door, total door count, or revenue figures, but the funding level and the caliber of retail partners indicate meaningful sell-through that justified Target's buyers pulling the trigger on a nationwide reset rather than a regional test.
The product itself is positioned around convenience and a differentiated prep format: fully baked, individually wrapped rolls that go from frozen to ready in 45 seconds in the microwave. The brand carries three SKUs — Original with Cream Cheese Frosting, Cookies & Cream, and Strawberries & Cream — each listing 8 grams of protein per bun and real cream cheese frosting as a callout ingredient. A packaging redesign earlier in 2026 put the brand's heritage story and functional attributes more prominently on-shelf, a move timed to the expanded retail push.
Frozen Segment Context
The frozen breakfast and bakery segment has attracted sustained retailer and investor interest as off-premise and at-home eating occasions remain elevated post-pandemic. Grab-and-go frozen breakfast items that deliver a restaurant-quality experience in under a minute at home are carving out space in freezer aisles that legacy brands once dominated unchallenged. For foodservice-adjacent operators and distributors, the growth of premium frozen bakery signals continued consumer willingness to pay up for quality and speed, a dynamic that intersects with the broader convenience and snacking trends reshaping center-store and the frozen daypart at retail.
Co-founder Chrisi Hammer, whose mother's 40-year-old recipe anchors the brand's identity, described the Target launch as a natural extension of a mission to democratize homemade comfort food. "As we grow, we want more people to be able to bring that joy into everyday moments," Hammer said. Co-founder Kass Martin framed the retailer expansion in direct brand-building terms: "Our goal is to build Sunshine Buns into something special people can find wherever they shop."
With Series A capital in hand, a proven multi-retailer distribution playbook, and at least one more national grocer on the near-term horizon, Sunshine Buns is executing a textbook early-scale CPG strategy — and the frozen breakfast aisle is a large enough prize to justify the ambition.
