The Hire
The Vitamin Shoppe, the 640-unit omnichannel specialty retailer anchored in vitamins, supplements, sports nutrition, and functional foods and beverages, has appointed Kimberley Gardiner as Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and Growth Officer, effective immediately. Gardiner reports directly to CEO Sharon Leite and joins the senior leadership team at a moment when the nearly five-decade-old chain is pressing to sharpen its digital and loyalty infrastructure.
Gardiner arrives from Tractor Supply Company, where as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer since 2022 she oversaw national, regional, and local marketing across a fleet of more than 2,400 stores. During her tenure, she was instrumental in growing Tractor Supply's Neighbor's Club loyalty program to more than 40 million members — a benchmark that signals meaningful capability in high-frequency retail CRM and personalization at scale. She also led the retailer's digital transformation, expanding performance marketing and omnichannel engagement under the Life Out Here brand umbrella.
Scope of the Role
At The Vitamin Shoppe, Gardiner will own brand strategy and creative, performance marketing, e-commerce, CRM and personalization, loyalty, and corporate communications. The mandate is explicitly growth-oriented: the company wants to accelerate customer acquisition, deepen loyalty, and build a more personalized experience across both physical stores and digital channels. Gardiner will also collaborate with the merchandising team and brand partners to sharpen product storytelling and surface emerging wellness trends — a priority for a retailer that stocks hundreds of national brands alongside seven proprietary labels including BodyTech, plnt, and True Athlete.
"Kimberley is an exceptional marketing leader with a proven ability to reinvent established brands and turn customer insights into measurable growth," said Leite. The framing is telling: with The Vitamin Shoppe approaching its 50th anniversary in 2027, the chain is positioning the hire as a bridge between its legacy of consumer trust and the personalization infrastructure modern specialty retail demands.
Why It Matters for Operators
For foodservice and functional-beverage suppliers that count specialty retail as a key off-premise channel, the appointment carries distribution implications. The Vitamin Shoppe's assortment already includes on-the-go functional foods and beverages, and a CMO with deep CRM and digital-marketing credentials is likely to lean into data-driven category expansion — creating potential velocity opportunities for better-for-you beverage and supplement-adjacent food brands seeking shelf and digital placement.
Before Tractor Supply, Gardiner held the CMO chair at Volkswagen of America and earlier spent 15 years at Toyota Motor Sales, USA, building a career rooted in brand strategy, retail content, and consumer experience. That automotive-retail background — heavy on dealer-network marketing and localized engagement — maps reasonably well to a specialty chain balancing national brand equity with store-level associate-driven selling. She holds a B.A. in Communication from Mills College and an MBA from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, and serves on the National Retail Federation Marketing Executives Council.
