The Expansion

Crafty Ramen, the Ontario-based restaurant-to-retail frozen ramen brand, is now stocked nationally at Target and Kroger, pushing its total North American footprint to approximately 6,400 retail doors. The listings, announced October 21, represent the most significant single distribution step in the brand's four-year retail journey and give U.S. grocery shoppers access to a five-SKU frozen line priced at $7.99 MSRP per bowl.

The chain joins Sprouts Farmers Market, Schnucks, Meijer, Albertsons, and Kings/Balducci's on the brand's existing U.S. shelf count. Domestically in Canada, Crafty Ramen had already scaled from roughly 150 doors to more than 2,300 retail locations before pivoting aggressively into the American market. CEO Khalil Khamis noted the company has sold more than 2 million bowls to date while expanding weekly production capacity from 2,500 to more than 55,000 units to support demand.

The Product and the Format

Crafty Ramen's retail format centers on a frozen layered "puck" combining real bone broth, scratch-made noodles, protein, vegetables, and toppings in a single ready-in-minutes package — stovetop or microwave. The brand produces its noodles daily in-house at its Ontario facility on Japanese noodle machines, replicating the process used at its restaurant locations. The five varieties — Spicy Chicken Tantanmen, Brisket Birria, Chicken Shoyu, Spicy Pork Miso, and Shiitake Pork Shoyu — are drawn directly from the restaurant menu developed by co-founders Jared and Miki Ferrall, who trained at Japan's Yamato School of Ramen before opening a 24-seat Guelph neighborhood restaurant in 2017.

The Spicy Chicken Tantanmen, featuring sesame chicken broth with Szechuan-braised ground chicken, is the top-selling SKU. The Brisket Birria variety signals the brand's willingness to go beyond traditional Japanese ramen profiles, layering birria broth with brisket, black beans, and tomatillo salsa — a fusion positioning that aligns with broader LTO and menu innovation trends driving the frozen entrée segment.

What It Means for the Category

The frozen Asian noodle segment has attracted significant operator attention as foodservice-quality positioning becomes a viable retail differentiator. At $7.99, Crafty Ramen prices well above conventional instant ramen — a gap the brand justifies through its bone broth and scratch-noodle credentials, two attributes that resonate with the premium convenience consumer who has driven growth in refrigerated meal kits and better-for-you frozen entrées. The Target and Kroger placements give the brand mainstream mass and grocery reach simultaneously, accelerating trial beyond the natural and specialty channel where better-for-you frozen products typically incubate.

For foodservice operators tracking restaurant-to-retail crossover, Crafty Ramen's trajectory — single concept to 6,400 retail doors in under a decade — illustrates how a credible culinary backstory and controlled supply chain can underpin rapid channel expansion without diluting brand equity. Khamis described the brand's retail build as intentional and production-led, citing the capacity scaling to 55,000-plus bowls per week as foundational to the Target and Kroger commitments.
