Multi-unit restaurant brands have a blind spot in their digital stacks: they know what guests ordered but not what drove — or blocked — the decision. EveryBite, the restaurant-technology company behind the SmartMenu platform, and digital-experience agency 3Owl are moving to close that gap with a strategic partnership announced September 16 that embeds intelligent menu personalization into the full restaurant digital guest journey.
The Engagement Numbers
SmartMenu has logged more than 12 million menu interactions to date, with guests actively filtering by allergen, dietary preference, ingredient, calorie count, and protein target. EveryBite characterizes those filter events as first-party intent signals — data that sits upstream of a transaction and reveals purchase drivers restaurants have historically been unable to capture. For context, the company points to 33 million-plus U.S. consumers managing food allergies and an additional 50 million-plus guests with dietary preferences or nutritional goals as the addressable guest population most acutely affected by static, undifferentiated digital menus.
The commercial case for multi-unit operators is rooted in conversion and retention. A guest who cannot quickly identify an allergen-safe or macro-compliant item faces a friction point that current loyalty and ordering platforms don't address. Unresolved, that friction translates to order abandonment or a visit diverted to a competitor. "The menu is one of the strongest expressions of guest intent," said Joseph Szala, Vice President and Partner of 3Owl. "By bringing EveryBite's menu intelligence into the digital experiences we create, we can help brands make discovery easier, reduce friction and create experiences that become more relevant the more we understand about the guest."
What the Integration Covers
The partnership combines 3Owl's restaurant website, native mobile app, and digital-ordering development work with EveryBite's SmartMenu technology and API layer. The API connects verified nutrition and allergen data — sourced through an integration with FoodCalc's MenuCalc platform — to guest-facing touchpoints including restaurant websites, ordering platforms, loyalty programs, and branded apps. Critically, the architecture is designed to sit alongside a brand's existing technology infrastructure rather than replace it, which lowers the integration barrier for chains already invested in third-party ordering and loyalty systems.
For operators evaluating personalization tools, the distinction matters. Most restaurant loyalty platforms personalize around past transaction data — reorder prompts, daypart-specific offers, location preferences. SmartMenu's value proposition targets the pre-transaction discovery phase: surfacing the right items before a guest has committed to an order, based on declared dietary needs rather than inferred behavior. Lucy Logan, Co-Founder of EveryBite, framed it directly: "What happens before that decision can be even more valuable. When guests filter for allergens, dietary preferences or nutritional goals, they're telling us what is driving or preventing a purchase. That's a powerful layer of first-party intent that restaurants have historically been unable to see."
The trend toward dietary-aware digital ordering is gaining traction across the foodservice industry as operators look to differentiate on personalization beyond price and convenience. Restaurant brands scaling digital ordering have increasingly leaned on technology integrations to improve off-premise conversion, and tools that address allergen disclosure are becoming more relevant given expanding menu-labeling expectations. The 3Owl and EveryBite partnership positions both companies to capture development mandates from chains seeking to upgrade their digital guest experience infrastructure without a full-stack replacement.
Neither company disclosed specific brand clients, contract terms, or revenue projections tied to the partnership.
