The LTO

Wingstop (NASDAQ: WING) is rolling a limited-time candy-crossover flavor — SOUR PATCH KIDS Wicked Punch — to all domestic units beginning Oct. 27, with an early-access window for Club Wingstop loyalty members opening Oct. 23. The flavor disappears Nov. 5, giving the chain a precisely timed Halloween-week traffic driver across its more than 3,000 locations worldwide, approximately 98% of which are franchisee-operated.

The sauce is built around a SOUR THEN SWEET REDBERRY glaze finished with SOUR PATCH KIDS Bitz — the candy brand's crunchy sugar-dusted pieces — and runs across all proteins: classic wings, boneless, tenders, and chicken sandwiches. Development came from Wingstop's internal flavor team in partnership with Mondelēz International (NASDAQ: MDLZ), the snack conglomerate behind the Sour Patch Kids brand.

The Brand Play

For Wingstop, the collaboration is a daypart and frequency lever dressed up as a Halloween stunt. The chain, which reported over $5.0 billion in system-wide sales in fiscal 2025, has consistently used LTO flavor drops to activate its loyalty database and sustain digital order volume. Giving Club Wingstop members first access four days before the national launch extends the LTO's effective sales window while reinforcing the app and direct-ordering channel — a strategy increasingly common among asset-light, franchise-heavy QSR operators looking to drive royalty-generating transactions without discounting.

On the CPG side, Mondelēz frames the Wingstop tie-in as the opening act of its "13 Days of Mischief" Halloween marketing program. Lauryn McDonough, Senior Director of Candy at Mondelēz International, noted that translating the brand's signature sour-to-sweet flavor arc into a wing sauce represents exactly the kind of brand extension its consumer base responds to at Halloween. For Mondelēz, foodservice co-branding provides incremental brand impressions outside the candy aisle at a high-traffic seasonal moment.

Operator Context

Candy-to-sauce crossovers are a small but growing niche in QSR LTO strategy — trading on nostalgic CPG equity to break through seasonal menu clutter. Wingstop's move follows a broader pattern among wing-focused and flavor-forward chains leaning into unexpected ingredient pairings to sustain media attention between core menu updates. With the Halloween occasion concentrated in a narrow two-week window, the Nov. 5 end date keeps franchise operators from carrying excess inventory and preserves the urgency that drives trial. President and CEO Michael Skipworth called the result "a treat" that "has no business being this good" — language calibrated to generate social sharing rather than describe a permanent platform addition.

Orders are available through the Wingstop app and wingstop.com at participating U.S. locations while supplies last. For more on how flavor innovation is reshaping QSR menu strategy and how loyalty programs are driving off-premise sales, see related coverage from Foodservice News.
